A Fast Color series is reportedly in development at Amazon. Hollywood heavyweight Viola Davis has signed on to serve as an executive producer on the series, which is an adaptation of the film of the same name. The indie superhero film was released last year to critical acclaim but failed to find its footing in the mainstream thanks to a botched theatrical release (it only released in 25 theaters total).
The film’s writer/director Julia Hart and co-writer Josh Horowitz are attached to serve the same roles on the pilot. They are also set to serve as producers through their two banners, Original Headquarters, and LD Entertainment, respectively. Davis will be producing alongside her husband Julius Tennon through their banner, JuVee Productions. JuVee Productions is also currently developing an adaptation of the Octavia Butler novel Wild Seed for Amazon.
Fast Color, the film, focuses on three generations (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Saniyya Sidney, and Lorraine Toussaint) of African-American women with superpowers. In the film, the character played by Mbatha-Raw returns home and rediscovers her powers years after she considered them gone. While there, the three women also discover that one of them has the power to save the world. It’s unclear if any of the film’s actors will return for the series but it will center on Mbatha-Raw’s character.
Fast Color is expected to be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video when it premieres.
