When legendary San Antonio Spurs big man Tim Duncan officially announced his retirement from the NBA, many around the league were shocked and saddened by the news. Everyone knew the day was coming soon, but no one was ready for the decision from ‘The Big Fundamental.’ Players, fans, and media members all took the time to reflect on Duncan and what he brought to the game of basketball.
But there was going to be one final chance to praise Tim in all of his glory. The Spurs announced they would be retiring his jersey at a special ceremony following a game on a Sunday evening. As anticipated, the event was spectacular.
All the main players in Duncan’s life came out. Up front and center were many prominent members of Tim’s life. His girlfriend, kids, coaches, teammates and even general manager R.C. Buford were all there to celebrate Duncan’s career. And the speeches were even better. From his Wake Forest coach Dave Odom to his Spurs teammates Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili and even Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, every person had a great story to tell about Timmy.
Witness below as his jersey was officially put up in the rafters in San Antonio. The video is full of great stories about Duncan’s scary staring at Parker, his love of Carrot Cake and even a nickname for Manu Ginobili we never knew existed. Duncan ended the night by saying he won some bets by not wearing jeans and talking for more than 30 seconds. And his four minute and 18-second speech perfectly captured who Tim is.
