It seems like the guys from the NBATV show ‘The Starters‘ have gotten over their podcast controversy with Grantland’s Bill Simmons but instead of moving on, they decided to take a step back. A big leap back actually, to April 1st, 1995.
In their latest episode of their daily television show, the guys – fittingly on April Fools Day – take us back 20 years in time. They immediately do some fun switches on their typical show mainstays.
They swap out Leigh Ellis’ ‘taking it to the max’ with ‘taking it to the gap’, ‘starters website programmer Trey Kerby’ instead of ‘starters blog editor Trey Kerby’ and Trey switches his ‘AYO’ with an ‘ALLRIGHTY THEN’.
They do a great job of getting the full nostalgic feel of 1995 by including cheesy editing, the talks of what players are in the race for the MVP and other awards in ’95 and old-school references aplenty.
They want you to send questions in through the ‘fax machine’ or through the mail, they pick their NBA version of ‘the new show, Friends’ and their top 10 plays get an awesome, retro look from how the NBA used to present the ‘courtside countdown’.
Looking back on all of this stuff now, it all seems, for lack of a better word, ancient. A lot of people take the quality of product we get now for granted because 20 years ago, everything was just so basic and now things we enjoy seem to come to us so easy.
So kudos to you, Skeets, Tas, Trey and Leigh along with Matt and JD behind the scenes. This was fantastic and it should continue every year with all of your great knowledge and unmatchable hilarity concerning basketball. These guy are a must watch every day on NBATV at 6:30 pm eastern and a must listen on their podcasts, especially on their special Friday weekly episode of ‘The Drop’.
