Listing all the ways All-Star guard Russell Westbrook has dominated headlines this 2014-2015 NBA season would take a while.
He’s recorded eight triple doubles this year. He was named February Player Of The Month for the Western conference. Several player of the week awards, the 2015 All-Star Game MVP and was named creative director of the True Religion clothing brand. How could you forget the execution interview or the scary facial fracture injury he suffered?
Looking past that, Westbrook has just been on an absolute tear lately. Without his MVP teammate Kevin Durant, Westbrook has looked like a MVP taken it upon himself to lead this team to the playoffs in whatever ways he can. He’s averaging 27.6 points ,8.4 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game this season exceeding his career avg by a lot. His 100 mph tenacious type of play has gained the attention of many, including Kobe Bryant and as of recent Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson.
Iverson took the broadcast booth to sit down and talk with Malik Rose and Marc Zumoff during the Sixers vs Pistons game. When asked about what he looks for in a player he talked about the fight and drive, then went on to give Westbrook an awesome compliment.
“I’m the biggest Westbrook fan I think there is. He reminds me so much of myself as far as his heart, laying it on the line night in and night out. Just bringing it every single night.”
Iverson was known to give it his all every night on the court. He played through countless injuries thanks to always taking a beating in the paint, but that never stopped him from driving back.
