Los Angeles Angels’ first baseman Albert Pujols has eclipsed Mickey Mantle on the all time home run list with this bomb last night off of Tampa Bay Rays’ right hander Preston Guilmet in the 9th inning of last night’s 6-2 victory for Los Angeles. It was Pujols’ 537th home run, and he is now in 16th place of all time.
The 35 year old slugger is still hitting for a ton of power as he’s now hit 17 big flies and has driven in 32 runs this season. Pujols started his career in St. Louis with the Cardinals and in his 11 years with the franchise he hit a remarkable .328 with 445 home runs and 1,329 RBI. He was most likely on pace to be the new home run king or at least give Barry Bonds a run for his money, but he didn’t seem like the same hitter in his first few years with the Angels. His average has dropped significantly, just .272, and his production driving in runs just hasn’t been the same, just 92 home runs, but he’s proving once again that he is still to be feared at the plate.
Well done, Albert Pujols. Well done.
