Welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. has been forced to withdraw from his forthcoming bout with fellow unbeaten welterweight contender Eimantas Stanionis. Both fighters were set to meet in the ring on Saturday, July 8 for a highly-anticipated showdown with world title implications. Thus far, Ortiz Jr. nor his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, have issued an official statement regarding the matter.
Unfortunately, this is the third time that this particular fight has been put on ice. Previously, both men were scheduled to participate in a welterweight contest in Texas on March 18, 2023. However, the bout was postponed when Stanionis underwent an emergency appendectomy.
“We communicated to Golden Boy, who is going to look at available dates for the second half of April,” Eimantas Stanionis’ promoter, Richard Schaefer, told ESPN.
“He needs to follow [the] doctor’s orders and he will be ready to go.”
Months later, the bout was postponed until July when Ortiz Jr. was sidelined due to an “undisclosed illness.” After a sudden postponement this week, it is unclear if both parties are interested in rescheduling the bout for a fourth time.
