Vasiliy Lomachenko is set to return to the ring later tonight to fight Richard Commey. If he exits the ring with a win, he could be in line to fight George Kambosos for the undisputed lightweight title. However, Devin Haney has seemingly emerged as the most likely challenger to fight Kambosos in Australia in 2022.
In the event that a fight with Kambosos is not possible, some fans have suggested that Lomachenko return to the super featherweight division and fight Shakur Stevenson or Oscar Valdez.
While those fights would attract fans, Lomachenko does not appear to be interested in returning to a division he has already earned titles in. The Ukranian fighter is not opposed to fighting Valdez or Stevenson, but he has made it clear that the fight must be at lightweight.
“I said before I’m still 135,” Lomachenko told Boxing Scene.
“I want to be undisputed champion in the lightweight division. I have a goal. I have a dream, so I don’t have a plan to go down.”
If Lomachenko does not go down to super featherweight, he could challenge Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, Joseph Diaz Jr. or Jorge Linares. However, his promoters at Top Rank would have to align themselves with other promotional bodies to make those fights happen. Simply put, Lomachenko’s future is very unclear.
