This Friday, new music playlists have been largely dominated by rap. From Cardi B’s “Up” video to Freddie Gibbs’s “Gang Signs” collaboration with ScHoolboy Q, rappers have made their presence felt. In the midst of some top tier rap releases, R&B fans have rejoiced. Lucky Daye teamed up with Tiana Major9 with “On Read” and VanJess has delivered a new project called Homegrown.
The Nigerian duo has delivered a grown and sexy 30-minute effort. Along the way, they linked up with Phony Ppl, Devin Morrison, Garren and Jimi Tents. Homegrown also features production from Kaytranada.
“The title of it is Homegrown. It’s a full-circle moment for us because that actually was supposed to be the original title of our project that ended up becoming Silk Canvas. It was because our journey up to that point had been really homegrown. It all started in our home, and it was very much between me and my sister—writing all the songs, producing, all that,” Jessica Nwokike of VanJess told Juliana Ukiomogbe of Interview Magazine about their new EP.
“It all started in our home, and it was very much between me and my sister—writing all the songs, producing, all that. With everything happening in the world, we felt like we were really getting back to that with the creation of a lot of the songs. It’s a really feel-good project. We have all those singles that we put out and some more that people are getting here in January.”
