When it comes to comic books and bringing them to life in Television or in Film, there really is no competing with DC or Marvel. However, the third largest comic book publisher, Valiant Comics, hopes to shake things up. After being acquired by DMG Entertainment, the aim is for a concerted push into Film, Television and other media platforms. CEO of DMG, Dan Mintz, who was also a stakeholder in Valiant Comics, spoke to THR regarding the future of the comic book characters:
“This is about taking it to the next level,” says Mintz, a former filmmaker-turned-entrepreneur. “I am not looking on expanding from a publishing standpoint but from a motion picture standpoint.”
While not as massive compared with the Big Two, comic industry parlance for giants Marvel and DC, Valiant does have a robust library of 2,000 characters and publishes an award-winning line of comics from top writers and artists with titles such as X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong, and Ninjak.
Valiant has already made some pushes into Television and Film, with Harbinger and Bloodshot (two of their more popular comics) being developed at Sony pictures with Vin Diesel attached to the latter. They also have two television series in development in Quantum & Woody and Dr. Mirage, both with different studios. Granted maybe people in my generation don’t know much about Valiant comics, but maybe this can spark a movement to make the ‘Big 2’ (Marvel & DC) into the ‘Big 3’.
