The University of Virginia has disenrolled 238 students who failed to comply with the school’s vaccination requirement. Of this group, less than 50 were enrolled in fall classes. University of Virginia spokesperson Brian Coy told The Virginia Pilot that the remaining students “may not have been planning to return to the University this fall at all.”
The University of Virginia is allowing disenrolled students the opportunity to register for fall classes if they meet the school’s requirement or file for an exemption by August 25. Those who fail to meet the school’s requirement by the August 25 deadline may reenroll in the spring if they meet the school’s requirements by then.
Throughout the summer, the university provided more than 500 vaccination waivers. Approximately 335 permanent waivers were provided to students with religious or medical exemptions. Another 184 temporary vaccine waivers were provided to students who were unable to get the vaccine during the summer, but committed to getting vaccinated once back on campus.
The school’s strict policy has led to more than 95% of the student body getting vaccinated. Other local universities like William & Mary, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University have also instituted strict COVID-19 vaccination requirements and posted high vaccination rates as a result.
