The University of Southern California Trojans and California Golden Bears will not square off on Saturday as previously scheduled. ESPN reports that the Pac-12 showdown has been pushed back due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Golden Bears’ locker room.
“It was a difficult decision to postpone this Saturday’s game against USC,” University of California, Berkley Athletic Director Jim Knowlton told the sports media outlet.
“We know how important every one of our games is to our student-athletes, especially our seniors who have been incredible representatives of the program, but it was the right thing to do.”
Knowlton did not specify how many players had contracted the virus. Instead, he simply said that there were “multiple” positive tests leading up to the scheduled game.
“Due to additional impact on specific position groups, we have decided to postpone Saturday’s game. We have had multiple COVID-19 positives within our program, and we are taking every step we can to mitigate the spread and protect the greater community,” Knowlton continued.
With Pac-12 approval, the two schools hope to revisit the game on December 4.
