Paramount is actually moving forward with its G.I. Joe universe. According to The Wrap, Money Heist star Úrsula Corberó has been cast as the Baroness in the studio’s upcoming Snake Eyes prequel. Corberó is set to star alongside Henry Golding in the titular role.
Robert Schwentke, director of R.I.P.D. and Red is attached to direct with Andrew Koji set to star opposite Golding as Storm Shadow. Not much is known about the plot specifics but the film will follow Golding’s protagonist as he trains to become a member of the Arashikage Clan. Though it’s the third G.I. Joe film to land in the last 10 years, the fact that its a prequel has many believing it’ll be somewhat of a reset button for the franchise. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner are attached as producers alongside Jeff Waxman as executive producer.
G.I. Joe hasn’t made too much noise since 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation. That film earned $375 million worldwide against a reported budget of $155 million. Channing Tatum and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson starred in earlier installments of the franchise but considering Tatum’s open disdain for the role and ‘The Rock’s unbelievable ascent over the last few years, I doubt we’ll see either in Snake Eyes.
Snake Eyes is slated to hit theaters on October 16th, 2020.
