The Umbrella Academy was a surprise hit when it landed on Netflix in February. Almost immediately, the comic book adaptation gained a vocal fan base that has only grown in the months since its release. News on a second season has been surprisingly light though as Netflix hasn’t commented publicly on whether or not the show is being renewed.
That renewal was thrown further up in the air Tuesday though thanks to a tweet from one of the show’s stars. Aidan Gallagher, who plays #5 in the first season tweeted his gratitude to the fans and Netflix for his participation in the show. Many fans were left puzzled by this though as no official announcement has been made.
Thank you for the role of a lifetime! I will always look back and say wow that was the coolest role I ever played! #Netflix #UCP #darkhorse #gerardway #gabrielba pic.twitter.com/9LoWBTC6Uy

It’d be a shocking cancellation for Netflix considering the positive response. So, many fans believe Gallagher is simply stepping away from the role voluntarily. It seems he is taking a break from acting to pursue a music career. That is further supported by another tweet from Gallagher back in February promoting his new single.
There’s also the chance Gallagher has simply been recast due to actions #5 took during the season. I’m not personally caught up on The Umbrella Academy so I can’t say for sure. But, from what I’ve seen so far I wouldn’t rule it out. Either way, I’d expect an announcement from Netflix regarding the future of the show soon.
The Umbrella Academy is now available on Netflix.
