Chris Beard and the Texas Longhorns have landed the commitment of UMass Minutemen star big man Tre Mitchell. The Texas program has landed several talented players for the first year under Beard’s leadership. Mitchell is yet another talented name that has decided to play for the Texas Longhorns under the thoughtful eye of Chris Beard. His transfer commitment took some time, but after his official visit to Texas, he made the decision almost immediately. The Longhorns should easily be considered a National Championship contender.
With the addition of big man Tre Mitchell, there’s a legit case to be made for Texas as a Preseason Top 5 team. And there’s a chance Chris Beard and his staff aren’t done …

Mitchell spent two seasons with UMass and was a dominant force at the big man position for the Minutemen. His sophomore year saw him average 18.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game. Mitchell also shot 51.9 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. His stats did nothing but improve from his freshman year and he fully showcased why he belongs in a bigger college basketball conference. Chris Beard continues to load Texas up for this upcoming season. The speculation is that the program may still continue to add players for this upcoming season.
Mitchell made this jump likely because it could more easily help him get to the NBA. He still has multiple years left of college eligibility should he choose to use them. Beard has managed to retain some of the Texas talents and add several key names as well. Winning an NCAA National Championship is hard, but Texas is poised to be a serious contender going into this season. This may be the best roster Chris Beard has ever coached.
