For some time now, Uber has allowed users to pay for their rides with PayPal. As a result, Uber and Uber Eats have now extended its payment options to allow users the option of paying with Venmo. Being that PayPal owns Venmo, this should come as no surprise to users of the service. With that being said, the change now gives users the flexibility of using a multitude of apps to pay for their rides. On the unfortunate side, users will not be able to split rides using Venmo. However, Uber now has included its own emoji for riders to use when describing their transaction in the PayPal owned service. According to Uber, this feature should be available in the coming weeks.
When asked about the upcoming update, Bill Ready of PayPal said, “Adding Venmo as a way to pay within Uber and Uber Eats furthers our mission to provide a seamless way to pay for the services that matter most to our customers.” In addition to making pay easier for its users, this move also serves PayPal’s mission to keep Venmo competitive against its competitor, Zelle. With the number of users of Zelle surpassing the number of Venmo users this month, this partnership puts Venmo back in a great place as it continues to face stiff competition. Going forward, Zelle will likely make a push to get into the ride sharing space as well.
