Newly-appointed Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue thought that given his team’s success this season, Kevin Love should have been a lock for the Eastern conference All-Star Team.
New Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue says Kevin Love’s All-Star snub is unprecedented for a first-place team.
“I just thought, in this league it’s always been about winning and winning has always been rewarded,” Lue said before the Cavs’ shootaround Friday morning in preparation for their game against the Detroit Pistons. “Being No. 1 in the East and Kevin being one of four guys in the NBA to average a double-double on a winning team, I’ve just never seen being a first-place team and getting one guy in. I’ve never seen that before.”
As McMenamin pointed out, Love is one of seven, not four, players averaging a double-double on a winning team this year.
Love is having a pretty good season, averaging 15.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. However, he hasn’t been particularly efficient, shooting just 41.8% from the field(really, really poor for a big man), and 35.8% from the arc.
Love has been fine this season, but there were a ton of guys that deserved to make the All-Star team over him in the East — all of the ones that did make it over him — and more. Some examples include Pau Gasol, Al Horford, Reggie Jackson, and Kemba Walker.
Sorry Coach Lue, despite your team’s winning record, Kevin Love has not performed at an All-Star level this season.
