Andrew Bogut played basketball for the Cleveland Cavaliers for exactly 58 seconds before suffering a season ending injury. Now forever destined to be one of the premier, “Oh, I forgot he played for them” guys in recent memory. Following that injury, the Cavs had a void to fill on their roster. According to ESPN’s David McMenamin, Tyronn Lue inquired about the services of Kevin Garnett to replace Bogut.
“I was like, ‘Man, you should come back and play for me.’ He was like, ‘Man, you all have a lot going on over there,'” Lue said. “That was before we hit our stride like we’re playing well now. He was like, ‘If you and [James] Posey were still playing, I would come.’ But he said, ‘But y’all are coaching and y’all are going through what you’re going through.’ He said, ‘Ah, I’m going to sit this one out.’ I said, ‘OK. We’ll call you next year.'”
Garnett retired after last season when he finished his career where it started, Minnesota. He averaged just 3.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and played just 38 games. Now 40 years old, it is unlikely Garnett would have contributed much to the Cavaliers this season but it would have been extraordinary to see him celebrate with LeBron James. The exuberant power in those celebrations would be excellent. Alas, we all will have to settle with watching him on TNT, which is almost just as good.
