While many people feel as the Bills quarterback competition will come down to either Matt Cassel or EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor may in fact be the starting quarterback week one. Taylor who spent his last four years backing up Joe Flacco in Baltimore expressed that he has been given a fair chance to win the job.
“The coaches have done a good job of splitting reps, and getting us all equal reps, getting us an equal opportunity to work with the ones, twos and threes. All of us have worked with each group an equal amount of time. That’s all I can ask for,” Taylor said.
The 2011 6th round pick from Virginia Tech never started a game during his four year career in Baltimore. This of course is not his fault as Joe Flacco has not missed a game in his 7 year career. While many people may not believe Tyrod is actually in the race head coach Rex Ryan does have ties to Taylor during the time they spent together in Baltimore.
“I actually tried to trade for (Taylor) when I was with the Jets,” Ryan told CJCL in Toronto. “If he’s not the fastest quarterback in the league, he’s certainly up there with them. He’s got great run skills. I’m not gonna say he’s Russell Wilson, but he’s got a little of that in him, where he’s able to run zone-reads and pull the ball down and be effective.”
Taylor may in fact be Rex’s guy. Is it possible that Ryan is blowing smoke? Yes, but don’t be surprised if Tyrod Taylor is the Bill’s starting quarterback week one. Taylor has often been called Michael Vick’s apprentice during his tenure at Virginia Tech. It remains to be seen whether Ryan will role the dice on the dual threat quarterback.
