There are many things that a coach can implement when he takes over a team. They all have their own method of working and if they can’t get through to a player, things must change. Either the player sucks it up and ditches his own way of working for the betterment of the team, or the coach isn’t connecting to anybody and he has to tweak his views.
In the case of Tyreke Evans and Alvin Gentry, it’s looking like Tyreke at the moment. It’s worth mentioning that Evans didn’t have a chance to participate in training camp which sort of puts him on the back foot, nevertheless Tyreke isn’t cutting it at the moment.
”He didn’t have the luxury of even being in training camp or playing in any preseason games,” Gentry said. ”It’s still fairly new to him. It’s not like he doesn’t want to do it. He played a style of basketball we got to try and convert to another style. That’s not easy to do on his part either.”
”I think everybody is learning (Gentry’s system),” Evans said. ”Before I came back, we were still trying to figure it out. I’ve just been working with the coaching staff and just trying to get better at it. But the most important thing for me and my teammates is to win games.”
”I know he wants to do it, I don’t have any doubt about that,” Gentry said. ”We just got to keep working on it. I think we also have to do as coaches adjust and put him in situations also where he’s comfortable.”
Now I can’t fully believe that the whole team is where Tyreke is at. Gentry can’t possibly have that complicated a system. I understand why Evans is struggling because he missed training camp. But he’s implying that Gentry’s system is hard to follow.
