Recently, former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed after an incident possibly involving a hit and run. In the aftermath of the incident one man who spoke up about the issue was Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl saftety Tyrann Mathieu, a native of the New Orleans area where Smith was killed.
Mathieu, a high school football star in New Orleans, was recently on the Rich Eisen show and spoke about Smith’s shooting death this past Saturday night. After the news came across of Smith’s murder, Mathieu took to his Twitter account to rip Smith’s alleged killer, Cardell Hayes, who was, himself, a local New Orleans football star.
Not long after that tweet was sent and since deleted things apparently got a little serious, as Mathieu claims it resulted in death threats from a few angry residents of the place he called home. Those people, who Mathieu says are related to the alleged killer, are keeping him from going back to his hometown. Mathieu, who was speaking about returning to The Big Easy to pay his respects to Smith, told the New York Daily News
“I don’t think I can go back to New Orleans. I don’t think that’s possible. Why? Because I called a spade a spade.”
However, despite the alleged threats towards Mathieu’s life, that isn’t stopping the safety from wanting to come home and do better for his city.
We are about to bring the biggest football camp that New Orleans has ever seen… Stay tuned!!!
