Who knew that when LeBron James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers that a huge can of worms would open that has gotten so out of control, it’s making super teams and amazing players think about returning home.
Back in 2005, as seen in the clip below, there was a team out of the Washington D.C. area that had 2 players on it that were better than just about everyone else playing in high school. The “D.C. Blue Devils” team led by Ty Lawson and Kevin Durant ripped up the AAU circuit.
The two players, Durant and Lawson, became best of friends.
Check out Kevin Durant and Ty Lawson going up against Los Angeles Clippers star, Blake Griffin and St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford’s ‘Athlete’s First’ team out of Oklahoma.
Fast forward 10 years and here we are. Ty Lawson went to the University of North Carolina and won a national championship and got drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 2009 and has been a member of that team ever since. Same thing for Kevin Durant when he was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics/Oklahoma City Thunder in 2007.
The topic has been brought up before of Durant returning to DC. He’s very proud of where he’s from and he’s not afraid to talk about it.
Now, according to Ben Standig of CSNWashington.com, Ty Lawson has said the two have talked about playing at home.
“I’ve talked to him about it, but I probably can’t tell you what he said,” Lawson laughingly told CSNwashington.com when the Nuggets visited last month….
“We talked about it. Everybody going home and playing for their respective cities,” Lawson said. “It would be cool, especially playing with the people you grew up with. I grew up with KD. It would be fun to play with them on one team.”
The one major flaw in this plan is the already established point guard in DC, John Wall. I think if Lawson comes to the Wizards with Durant, Wall might have a thing to say about that.
Either way, we’re still a long, long time away from either of these guys even considering coming back home.
