On Tuesday, reporter David Pick tweeted out a video of free agent point guard Ty Lawson seemingly announcing his intention to sign with the Shanxi Dragons. In a confusing move, Lawson later that same day tweeted that he had not signed in China. According to HoopsHype, Lawson’s agent says that the point guard is still interested in signing overseas, but is also in contact with multiple NBA teams:
Free agent guard Ty Lawson has not signed with any team in China, agent Larry Fox confirms to HoopsHype. “Several teams have expressed interest in Ty from China and there have been discussions and Ty has expressed mutual interest,” Fox said. “In addition, several NBA teams are interested in Ty, Ty is weighing his options and no decision has yet been made.”
Lawson, once a semi-elite point guard, fell from stardom suddenly and rapidly, dealing with a number of off-court incidents, most notably several DUIs.
Lawson spent last season with the Sacramento Kings, appearing in 69 games (25 starts). It was the best season he’s had since his days in Denver; he averaged 9.9 points and 4.8 assists on 45.4 percent shooting. Lawson, 29, should still be in his prime.
If you take away all of the off-court issues and assume he’s in good shape, he’s a really talented, quick point guard. Unfortunately, you can’t take those things away. It will be interesting to see where Lawson ends up.
