Netflix is bringing short films to the forefront with the upcoming release of Two Distant Strangers. Starring Joey Bada$$, Martin Desmond Roe and Zaria, the film tells the story of a young, Black man who seemingly relives the same traumatic experience day after day.
“In Two Distant Strangers, cartoonist Carter James’ repeated attempts to get home to his dog are thwarted by a recurring deadly encounter that forces him to re-live the same awful day over and over again,” Netflix writes.
The film was largely put together during the pandemic. Six Feet Over Co-Founders Travon Free, Van Lathan and Nicholas Maye wanted to put together a short film that reflected both the health crisis and policing crisis that has defined the last year.
“When we set out to create this short in the middle of the simultaneous pandemic and social justice crises, we didn’t know what to expect. But in just five days, we pulled off the nearly impossible to make this incredible film. And all of us have been so filled with gratitude to see so many people responding to this story of resilience and perseverance,” Free and Roe told Deadline.
“Two Distant Strangers tackles a tough subject for everyone, but in an effort to forge a new direction in the conversation. And now having Netflix come on board to bring that message to millions is an incredible opportunity.”
The short film has already earned great reviews and an Oscar nomination. Check out the trailer below before it hits Netflix on April 9.
