True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto took a step back from the critically acclaimed series during the development of season four and handed the reigns of the show over to Issa Lopez for season five. However, Pizzolatto may not be done with the franchise entirely. During a recent interview with Tim Green, the series’ showrunner expressed an interest in continuing the story of the show’s first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” Pizzolato said. “But no, there is pressure, but I don’t really feel or respond to pressure that way. I get pressure [from] myself and beyond that it doesn’t exist so much for me and pressure tends to more revolve around, am I discharging my duty correctly for me?”
Pizzolato didn’t provide exact details regarding the new story he has for season one characters Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart, but he did say that he thinks McConaughey and Harrelson may be willing to reprise their roles.
“If I said something on your show, there would be like five spec scripts going around Hollywood,” Pizzolato continued. “No, I mean, it’s character-based again, that’s all, but it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, ‘Oh, I had that in my head,’ and we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
True Detective will return for season five in 2027, moving the show from Alaska to New York with new characters. As for bringing back Cohle and Hart, Pizzolato has not confirmed anything yet, but he has piqued the interest of a few day-one viewers.
