Trey Lance is set to make his first career start for the San Francisco 49ers after Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out of Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The rookie quarterback has gotten some snaps this season but has not gotten the chance to start until now. Lance was taken with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and is expected to be the future of the 49ers franchise. Jimmy Garoppolo was injured during the team’s Week 4 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.

Trey Lance has played some limited snaps and did fill in after Jimmy Garoppolo went down against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. So far this season, Lance has completed ten of his 19 pass attempts for 162 yards and three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also has 11 carries for 44 yards and a rushing touchdown. There have been flashes of potential from the young quarterback this season and now he can showcase his talent in a full game.

The 49ers traded up and drafted Lance with the intention of him being the team’s starting quarterback eventually. This is a chance for him to attempt to showcase why he should be the team’s starting quarterback now. Trey Lance could be a great NFL quarterback one day and this Sunday his career truly begins. Having to choose between two starting-caliber quarterbacks would be a good problem to have.
