The Denver Broncos squeaked by the Carolina Panthers 21-20, last night in Trevor Siemian’s first career start with the Broncos. A late missed field goal by Carolina’s Graham Gano sealed the deal for Siemian to earn his first career win as an NFL starting quarterback.
Siemian displayed a lot of his strengths in his first career start and one thing that jumped off my screen while watching him under center was his poise and calm demeanor. The situation never looked too big for Siemian, as he was able to bounce back in the second half after throwing two interceptions, including a bad pass that was picked off by Bene Benwikere, in which Siemian felt a heavy rush. Gary Kubiak’s play calling may by the cause to blame, but it looked that Siemian was conservative on a lot of his throws taking the short check downs that the defense was giving him. One thing I would have liked to see more of was Siemian taking more shots down the field. Siemian threw a lot of check downs and was looking to take extra care of the ball after his two interceptions, but a good sign that Siemian is really looking to take care of the ball in his first start, which for sure makes Kubiak very happy.
There were a lot of Siemian’s game that was extremely impressive but nothing was more glaring then his mobility with the ball, as well as his great ability to move around in the pocket. Even with a heavy rush from Carolina, Siemian was not afraid to tuck the ball and run which is a great sign for a young Quarterback. Coming from an aging Peyton Manning last year, Kubiak couldn’t be more excited to have a great athlete like Siemian. In an offense that caters to the run game, play action passes and QB bootlegs will fit perfectly for Siemian who showed he can use his legs just as much as his arm. With great poise and a great defense behind him, I expect Trevor Siemian to continue to grow and develop as a starter in the NFL.
