Last month Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, a producer on the Transformers films claimed that sequels for both Bumblebee and Transformers: The Last Knight were in development. This confused many fans though as Hasboro had clearly stated Bumblebee was meant to be a full reboot.
However, recently Bonaventura was asked to clarify his comments. He said the current focus is on the script for a sequel to Bumblebee. Beyond that, he didn’t offer much information on a future installment of the mainline series. When asked if the script would also serve as a sequel to The Last Knight, he responded simply, “No.”
No director has been announced for the upcoming Bumblebee sequel. Original director Travis Knight didn’t rule out his return. However, he has also stated his desire to return to working with Laika, his award-winning stop motion animation studio.
With the declining quality and diminishing box office returns of the main series, many fans assumed the franchise was dead. But, Bumblebee was somewhat of a surprise when it hit theaters late last year. Fans and critics alike praised the film as the best Transformers since the original in 2007. Ultimately, it ended its run with $465.9 million at the global box office, more than earning a sequel.
