Y’all ready for your second training day? Well, you better be since, according to Collider, a prequel to the 2001 classic Training Day is in development at Warner Bros.
Reportedly, the film will take place in 1992, about a decade earlier than the original. It will apparently occur a week before the Rodney King verdict was handed down, which was the tipping point that kicked off the L.A. riots. The script is being written by Nick Yarborough but, no other cast or crew members are attached to the film so far.
Antoine Fuqua’s Oscar-nominated film brought in a whopping $100 million against a $45 million budget in 2001. It was a turning point for the careers of both Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington. And, though the film is set to follow Washington’s Alonzo Harris, Washington is not attached to the prequel at this point. However, there’s a case to be made that his son could play a younger version of Harris in the film.
For now, though, the elder Washington is set to appear in a number of projects over the next few years, including an adaptation of Macbeth alongside Frances McDormand. He’s also attached to star in a crime-thriller called Little Things with Rami Malek. As for his son, John David Washington will appear next in Christopher Nolan’s mysterious new film, Tenet, landing next summer.
The Training Day prequel has yet to receive an official release date.
