Tory Lanez has been charged with multiple felonies in the state of California, including assault with a firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered weapon. Originally, the singer’s trial was set to begin on September 14, 2022. However, it does not appear that he will return to court until anywhere between November 28 and December 8. Rolling Stone‘s Nancy Dillon has reported that the delay was triggered by an arbitration involving the singer’s lawyer. As a result, Dillion reports that jury selection will likely not begin until December 5, 2022.
The Toronto native’s legal troubles stem from an incident that occurred in July 2020. Following a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s home, police arrived at the scene of a dispute in Southern California. Video of the incident shows officers speaking to Tory Lanez, Megan Thee Stallion and Kelsey Nicole separately. Uproxx also reported that Megan Thee Stallion had “suffered an injury to her foot” during the incident. Shortly thereafter, authorities arrested Tory Lanez and charged him with carrying a concealed weapon.
One month after the incident, Megan Thee Stallion alleged that the “injury to her foot” was the result of Tory Lanez firing a weapon at her.
“Yes, Tory shot me. You shot me and you got your publicist and your people going to these blogs lying,” she said via Instagram.
After Megan Thee Stallion accused him of shooting her, Tory Lanez disputed her claims in a song called “Money Over Fallouts.”
“Megan people tryna frame me for a shootin’…Knowin’ I ain’t do it,” he raps.
In November 2020, he formally pleaded not guilty to the felony assault charges levied against him and received a no-contact order. If convicted, he faces up to 22 years in prison.
