The first weekend of Premier League play has come to an end. With every team having now played their first of 38 league games, the opening ten matchups of the season provided fans with a bit of an idea of what to expect for the 2018-2019 season.

The top teams from last season dominated their first matches. Man City kicked off their run at back to back titles with a 2-0 against Arsenal. Led by new coach Unai Emery, the Gunners will be hoping to perform well against lesser teams. However, they looked to be playing keep up all throughout their first match. The team will need to learn to compete against top-tier teams or once again risk missing out on Champions League.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool, all had three points by the end of the weekend. Liverpool exploded back into Premier League play, earning a 4-0 win over West Ham.

Recent signing Naby Keita put on an impressive performance, setting up the assist to the first goal of the game and creating key opportunities throughout the match.

Chelsea came out with an impressive, if not slightly expected 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town. Last year, Chelsea finished just shy of the top 4 and will need to make every match against weaker teams count, given last year’s frequent inability to take on teams with similar talent caliber.

On the bottom side of the table, the three recently promoted teams struggled in their first matches back in the Premier League. Cardiff City and Fullam both were taken down in 2-0 defeats against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace respectively. The Wolverhampton Wanderers managed to earn a point against Everton in a hard-fought 2-2 draw. The Wolves went down a goal early in the match but managed to fight back from both a 1-0 and a 2-1 deficit, giving their fans something to cheer for in their first match at the top-level in six years.

Arguably the most popular sports league in the world is now back in action. While the first weekend was mostly filled with expected results, the sheer excitement of some of the world’s greatest players once again clashing head to head is enough to get any football fan ready for the season.
