In an interivew published Sunday in the Tampa Tribune, Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy made comments that are drawing a lot of attention.
“Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it.”
He also mentioned “It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.”
Dungy would later clarify his comments by saying Sam “absolutely” deserves a chance to play in the NFL.
“I do not believe Michael’s sexual orientation will be a distraction to his teammates or his organization. I do, however, believe that the media attention that comes with it will be a distraction.”
Similar comments have been made of Cleveland’s Johnny Manziel. However, because of ESPN’s affiliation with Disney (a strong supporter of gay rights), this story has been publicized frantically.
During Monday morning’s Mike and Mike, Hall of fame player and coach Mike Singletary reiterated one point and one point only, “Can he help us win football games?”. Time will only tell. First he has to make the team. The St. Louis Rams opened camp on Monday.
