New Orleans Pelicans guard Tony Allen is expected to miss three-to-four weeks after suffering a non-displaced left proximal fibula fracture, the Pelicans announced.
Allen, 35, is in his first season with New Orleans. In 22 games with the Pelicans, he’s averaging 4.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game on 48.4 percent shooting.
Allen is playing just 12.4 minutes per contest, by far the lowest average of his career.
Allen was drafted 25th overall by the Boston Celtics in 2004. He played in Boston for six seasons, winning a championship in 2008. He left Boston to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2010, where the defensive-minded guard was a natural fit to their “grit-n-grind” mentality.
He stayed in Memphis until the 2017 offseason, when he signed with the Pelicans.
In October, the Grizzlies announced that they will be retiring Allen’s number.
For his career, Allen has averaged 8.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 22 minutes per game on 47.5 percent shooting.
Allen has maintained a reputation as an elite defender over the course of his career. He’s been named three times each to the All-Defensive First Team (2012, 2013, 2015), and Second Team (2011, 2016, 2017).
