The Russo Brothers are taking a hard left turn away from the MCU with their next feature, Cherry. And they’re bringing Tom Holland along for the ride.
In the film, Holland stars as Nico, an American veteran of the War in Iraq who suffers from PTSD because of his experiences there. Upon returning to the states, Nico becomes addicted to opioids and falls into harsh debt because of it, prompting him to begin a life of bank-robbing. The film is based on a book of the same name written by Nico Walker. The book is, in turn, based on Walker’s real-life experiences after returning home from Iraq.
Holland took to Instagram to share the first image from the film on Friday and it features a VERY different version of the actors than audiences have seen before. With a buzzcut and gun pointed directly at the camera, Holland posted the caption, “No alarms. I’m a wanted man. They’ll kill me…” Which is presumably what Nico says to the unfortunate bank teller on the receiving end of the gun barrel.
The Russo Brothers recently posted their own photo commemorating the beginning of the film’s production. But, sadly, other than the short synopsis and these two photos, we don’t really know quite what to expect from the film. The Russos are producing the film through their AGBO production banner, which is also set to produce adaptations of Grimjack and Battle of the Planets. Before any of that though, the company has 21 Bridges releasing later this month with another Marvel star, Chadwick Boseman, playing the lead.
Ciara Bravo, Bill Skarsgård, Jack Reynor, and Michael Gandolfini are set to star alongside Holland in the film. Jeff Wahlberg, Kyle Harvey, and Forrest Goodluck are also set to appear. The film has yet to receive a release date or official distributor but Netflix was reportedly interested.
