Former Indianapolis Colts coach, now, NBC analyst Tony Dungy shared his thoughts about drafting openly-gay player Micheal Sam. Read what he told the Tampa Tribune below.
“I wouldn’t have taken him,” the former coach told the Tampa Tribune. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth . . . things will happen.’’
Not everyone on the St. Louis Rams feels the same as Dungy. Rams wide receiver T.J. Moe — who played with Sam at Missouri — had this to say:
“There’s a 90-man roster right now. It doesn’t go 89, and then Michael Sam’s over there — this is the gay team, this is the straight team. Michael Sam is on this team and he’s treated just like anyone else.”
Tony Dungy is very religious man, so his comments do not surprise me. Dungy is entitled to his own opinion and we’re sure others feel the same way. However, is Michael Sam as big of a distraction as Johnny Manziel or Josh Gordon? Let’s be real about this: the world is full of homophobes and they exist in the sports world. They’ll hide it under the guise of “distractions” or whatever the hell reasons they comes up with.
Sad but true.
