Team USA brought home a well-deserved gold medal i in the women’s 4x400m relay earlier today. Sydney McLaughlin, Dalilah Muhammad, Athing Mu and Allyson Felix finished in first with a time of 3 minutes and 16.85 seconds. Poland finished in a distant second with a time of just over 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Rounding out the top three, Jamaica earned the bronze medal in the women’s 4x400m relay.
McLaughlin and Muhammad are no strangers to 400-meter dashes. Earlier this week, the two women both broke the world record in the 400-meter hurdles. The New Jersey native took the gold medal while Muhammad took the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Mu became the first American woman to win the 800-meter dash at the Olympics in more than 50 years. Above all else, Felix won her 10th medal in the women’s 400-meter dash yesterday.
With a win in the women’s 400-meter dash and the women’s 4x400m relay, Felix has become the most decorated American track star in Olympic history. This title was previously held by Carl Lewis, who finished his Olympic career with 10 medals.
“I feel at peace,” Felix said.
“I went out, had all the confidence in these amazing women. I wanted to take it all in one last time around, and it was special.”
Felix has said that she plans to retire from the sport before the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France.
