Director Todd Phillips gave fans their first look at Zazie Beetz in the upcoming Joker movie on when he released the following picture on Instagram:
Beetz is playing single mother Sophie Dumond who sees how the lower classes struggle beneath the wealthy. Phillips previously shared first-look photos of Joaquin Phoenix in costume on his personal Instagram as well. Phillips released the photos of Beetz in response to set photos that leaked earlier this week.
Todd Phillips has been very forward about his distaste for the low-quality paparazzi set photos being released. He responded to fans who complained about the wealth of information coming out of the production. “Here’s the issue,” Phillips said. “We have paparazzi all over our set, at every turn. And it bums me out that they constantly put out their bad shots. So I figure, may as well put out some good ones.” Phillips is referring to photos and videos of Phoenix filming a scene terrorizing a subway station in full Joker make-up that circulated social media earlier this week.
Beetz is coming off of an Emmy-nominated performance in the second season of FX’s Atlanta. She also had a memorable turn as Domino earlier this year in Deadpool 2.
The untitled Joker is in production now with the release slated for October 2019.
