General manager Jon Robinson released a statement concerning the matter:
“I just felt like we needed to go in a different direction, and maximize the skill sets of the players on the field. I think in any organization, not to speak for other teams, but its ownership, the head coach and the general manager, they all have to be on the same page.”
Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk also addressed the organization moving on from Mularkey:
“It is certainly unfortunate that we couldn’t find enough common ground. I generally believe that continuity is the best path for success, but I also view this as an important moment for our football team as we try to make that next step to sustained success on the field. Jon will begin the search immediately to identify that person.”
The Titans recently announced that they wanted to extend Mularkey through the 2018 season. However, sources state that the Titans wanted to make changes to the coaching staff.
Mularkey went 20-21 as the head coach of the Titans. He led the team to back-to-back 9-7 seasons, placed second in the AFC South, and won a playoff game this season. The Titans lost to the New England Patriots in the Divisional round 35-14.
The Titans have shown a lot of interest in New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. It seems that McDaniels is a lock for the coaching job for the Indianapolis Colts, but the Titans will see if they can lure McDaniels away.
