South Carolina Senator Tim Scott has suspended his bid to become the 47th President of the United States of America. Scott shared the news with Terry Gowdy of FOX News on Sunday, November 12.
“When I go back to Iowa, it will not be as a presidential candidate. I am suspending my campaign,” Scott told the former lawmaker turned television host on Sunday evening.

Scott’s decision to suspend his presidential campaign comes with little surprise to political insiders and fellow presidential hopefuls. This past weekend, the South Carolina-born politician suspended all of his scheduled appearances in Iowa after coming down with the flu following the most recent Republican debate in Miami, Florida. In Iowa, he trailed Republican front runner Donald Trump by more than 30 points. Nationally, Scott not only trails Trump in the polls, but he also sits behind Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis and Chris Christie.
Scott will bow out of the presidential race, but he may not be finished with campaigning just yet. As recently as late September, the South Carolina lawmaker was considered to be a potential running mate for Trump in 2024.
“Tim Scott. The African American senator from South Carolina is currently trying to defeat Trump in the primary, but he hasn’t been critical enough (or enough of a threat) to provoke Trump’s ire,” Nathan L. Gonzales of Roll Call wrote in September.
Scott has not mentioned the idea of running alongside the former reality show host, but it will likely be floated as possibility in the weeks and months to come.
