There is a new king in the world social media. Storage software company Cloudflare has reported that TikTok dethroned Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as the most popular social media platform of 2021. Furthermore, Cloudflare reports that TikTok gained the top spot as the most visited site of the year as well.
At the end of 2020, TikTok jumped into the top 10 and solidified its place. Within the last year, it has not only surpassed Google, but it has also shot past Amazon.com, Facebook.com and Netflix.com as well.
“2021 told a different story. It was on February 17, 2021, that TikTok got the top spot for a day. Back in March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it was after August 10, 2021, that TikTok took the lead on most days,” João Tomé and Sofia Cardita of Cloudflare wrote.
“There were some days when Google was #1, but October and November were mostly TikTok’s days, including on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26).”
TikTok was not the only site to see growth in 2021. WhatsApp.com jumped into the top ten for the first time while Twitter made the switch from ten to nine. Meanwhile, Netflix.com dropped from fifth place to seventh place and Instagram dropped out of the top ten completely.
