The damage in Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria has been called “apocalyptic.” More than 3 million Puerto Ricans have been waiting for help a week after the hurricane ended. Celebrities are stepping up to help while the federal response slowly develops.
Fat Joe, who is of Puetro Rican and Cuban descent, announced that he, Tidal, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Bronx President Ruben Diaz Jr will send planes filled with supplies to the island.
A 200,000 pound cargo plane will be filled and sent to Puerto Rico on October 7. It will have water, hygiene products, batteries, diapers, baby wipes and more.
Tidal is asking people to donate by October 5. There are places in New York where residents can drop off donations.
In addition to the cargo plane, all ticket proceeds from a Tidal benefit concert in Brooklyn will go to natural disaster victims. The concert will be October 17 at the Barclays Center.
Fat Joe spoke to Billboard about how Hurricane Maria has affected him:
Yes, I have a bunch of family in Puerto Rico. We have been able to get in contact with most of them, but I have an aunt in Ponce, and we can’t get in touch with her. My father is really stressed out — it’s crazy.
Donation locations: The drop-off sites will accept donations every day between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Courtesy of Variety.)
