It’s been nearly a week since The Oklahoma City Thunder parted ways with former Head Coach Scott Brooks, and the rumors of Kevin Ollie and Billy Donovan surfaced right off the bat.
After Ollie declined an interview and talked about his committment to UCONN the Thunder turned their sights towards Florida Gators Head Coach Billy Donovan.
Donovan as everyone remembers has flirted with the idea of becoming an NBA head coach and nearly was an NBA coach back in 2007. Donovan would get cold feet and decide to stay in the college ranks for the time being.
The past couple seasons it was no secret Donovan wanted to give the NBA a shot. Even legendary college coach and Donovan’s mentor Rick Pitino believed Donovan had the urge to coach in The NBA.
Oklahoma City has hired two of Donovan’s assistants from Florida and Donovan reportedly has a close relationship with Thunder GM Sam Presti.
The talks between Donovan and The Thunder are in the early stages, but I think a deal gets done. Donovan is a players coach and is a passionate coach who has nearly maxed out what he can do in the college ranks at such young age.
Donovan turns 50 years old on May 30 won back to back national championships in 2006 and 2007, and has a 467-186 record as a head coach.
