With Avengers: Endgame now less than a week away, it’s almost impossible to ignore the flood of Avengers-related content. So, we wanted to do something a little different here at Def Pen to break through the noise. Every day leading up to the premiere, we’ll be breaking down exactly why each of the original Avengers isn’t going to keep fighting Thanos in Endgame, even though he already beat them once. Today, it’s the God of Thunder himself, Thor.
Thor’s no stranger to otherworldly threats. For example, one of the first times we see him, he’s fighting the Frost Giants on their home planet of Jotunheim. That Thor is a lot different from the Thor we know now though. When we first meet him, the God of Thunder is a younger, much brasher, hot-headed beefcake essentially. I mean, he’s not even deemed ‘worthy’ to wield his hammer for the majority of Thor. However, through his time on Earth, he learned the importance of humility and what it means to be a ‘hero.’ From then on, he swore to protect the Nine Realms.
It’s obvious that he’s upheld this vow since then. He’s saved our world twice on top of general peacekeeping across the realms. Through all that though, he still hadn’t learned what it meant to be a true ‘leader’ yet. Enter Hela and her assault on Asgard. During Ragnarok, Thor finally (as cheesy as it sounds) found the power within himself all along, literally. In the end, he stepped up as the king and recommitted himself to the people of Asgard. Then, in Infinity War, he loses most of the Asgardians.
That loss caused him to go on the revenge tour of the cosmos we saw throughout the third Avengers film. It also caused him to regress back to the almost child-like, impulsive Thor we saw in his first outing. He just showed up at the Battle of Wakanda and swung his new weapon around a bit. Granted, he did turn the tide for the Avengers but, still, had he just gone for the head instead of the satisfaction, we probably wouldn’t even need Endgame.
In Avengers: Endgame, Thor will have to put aside his vengeful impulse and personal issues with Thanos to serve the greater good. His people are gone and likely won’t come back after the snap is undone. His adopted people are crippled, as are the survivors across the nine realms. Thor will have to step up and lead the Avengers like we haven’t seen before as he is one of the few heroes left who can actually go toe-to-toe with Thanos.
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters worldwide on April 26th.
