SUSPIRIA (1977)
Stars: Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini, Flavio Bucci
Quote: “Susie. Sarah. I once read that names which begin with the letter ‘S’ are the names of SNAKES!”
Synopsis: A young American dancer attends an elite ballet academy which she quickly finds out is plagued with mysterious murders and a front for something more sinister.
Scare Factor: ‘Suspiria’ is a straight up bizarre film. The candy colored cult classic makes little sense logically but is wildly entertaining visually. Within the first ten minutes there is already a gruesome hanging that will certainly make your eyes pop. Each scene is brightly lit with a hue of red, blue or green and is a giant contrast to the horror that occurs in the film. I mean having thousands of maggots raining down on me from a bright blue attic or getting caught in a pit full of barbed wire is something out of a nightmare. Aside from a few gratuitous gore scenes, the film primarily relies on suspense and loud, and I mean LOUD, music to keep you hooked. This Italian film is a total mind trip that will keep your brain puzzled for days to come.
