Who said the zombie franchise is dead? Danny Boyle surely doesn’t think so.
Even though 28 Days Later and its sequel 28 Weeks Later came out over a decade ago, fans still held on to hope a threequel would someday arrive. We still don’t have any REAL info on when that day will be but Boyle recently sat down with The Independent and revealed a third 28 Days Later film is in development with Alex Garland, the writer of the first film, returning to pen the script.
“Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part. It’s properly good,” Boyle said. “The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all. He’s concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it’s stood in abeyance really, but it’s a you-never-know.”
For a long time, whispers have circulated about a third film, tentatively titled 28 Months Later. That title could still very well be in play but we just don’t know yet. And, with both Boyle and Garland returning to the franchise after skipping the second film, there’s no guarantee they’ll continue the story from that film. Speaking of franchises, I know this isn’t a traditional franchise but it’s funny that this news dropped just a week after Boyle swore off franchises. Granted, he did start this one so, it probably holds a special place in his heart.
