Few people have ever had the type of run that The Weeknd has had over the last 18 months. The Toronto native has been a household name for some time, but his last album, Blinding Lights, elevated his status to new heights. His fourth studio album broke Apple Music’s global pre-adds record and sold 480,000 copies in its first week. Not to mention, all 14 songs charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Blinding Lights” has spent 86 weeks on the charts. To top it all off, he performed at Super Bowl LV and stole the show at multiple awards ceremonies. After all of that, The Weeknd is prepared for what he calls a “new era.”
The Toronto native has been teasing new music for a few weeks now, but things became a bit more real when he shared nearly two minutes of previously unreleased music through YouTube on August 1. The Weeknd did not deliver a full verse, but the upbeat production landed in between Starboy and Blinding Lights. Fortunately, he returned this Friday to not only deliver a full song but also a new video.
