The Tournament officially tipped off this past weekend and the South and West regions were first up to bat. Presumptive favorites Team 23, LAUNFD, Overseas Elite and Bluff City Blues were all at the tops of their respective brackets. Before the weekend would end, only two of those teams would survive.
The bracket still needs to be filled out by the Midwest and and East regions but as it currently stands, half of the Super 16 field is set.
The Tournament recapped the first day of action on Saturday. All higher seeded teams survived out in the West Region which took place in Los Angeles. Team 23 and LAUNFD survived with huge blowout wins in day 1 while Team Colorado, 7outz and Team Utah had some close calls.
The second day of action wasn’t too kind to one higher seed, LAUNFD. The team has some Drew League stars on it including former NBA players Bobby Brown and Cuttino Mobley but it wasn’t enough. The second seed fell to the 7th seeded Team Utah which includes some Utah Utes alumni. At the end of the first weekend out West, Team 23, Team Colorado, Few Good Men and Team Utah are all moving on to the Super 16 in New York.
In the South Region, upsets highlighted the first two days. In day one, Kings of the South, sponsored by both DeMarre Carroll and Thaddeus Young, pulled off the 11-6 upset over the Cat Pack, a team full of Davidson alumni. TMD, Ram Nation, HBC and Trained to Go all advanced after day one despite some close calls, all winning by five points or fewer.
Bluff City Blues, a team full of Memphis alumni and the number one seed in the South Region, fell victim on the second day of action. Trained to Go, the 8th seeded in the South, came up big on day two with a one point win over the top seed in the South. Overseas Elite, Ram Nation and TMD all handled business pretty easily during day 2.
You can still buy tickets for future TBT events in Philadelphia, Chicago and New York. If you’re not able to get out to any of these locations for the action, you can stream it all here, courtesy of Whistle Sports and The Tournament.
