The Sacramento Kings have had their hands full already this summer, having to deal with tons of drama surrounding star center DeMarcus Cousins and head coach George Karl. However, their priority this offseason is finding a point guard. They have their eye on Phoenix point guard Eric Bledsoe, according to Sean Deveney of the Sporting News. Deveney wrote:
The Kings, one source said, are expected to express interest in Bledsoe. While Sacramento has been buried in rumors involving center DeMarcus Cousins, a league executive said the Kings have been far more focused on improving the point guard position. The Kings started Darren Collison at the position, but would like to move him into a backup role. And if Sacramento keeps Cousins, bringing in his former Kentucky teammate and good friend surely would help to keep him happy.
The Phoenix Suns are reportedly prepared to sign Brandon Knight to a 5-year, $70 million deal, and will likely send Eric Bledsoe packing. If they do sign Knight, Bledsoe will almost certainly be on the trading block, and Sacramento could realistically trade for him.
It’s a bit surprising to see Sacramento in such heavy pursuit of point guards, as their current floor general, Darren Collison, had a great season this year. Collison averaged 16.1 points, 5.6 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game this season, while shooting pretty efficiently. However, Bledsoe does have more upside than Collison, and is two years younger.
Bledsoe isn’t the only former Kentucky point guard the Kings have had their eye on. Rajon Rondo is another name that the team has been tied to.
Bledsoe is much younger than Rondo, and doesn’t have the injury history that Rondo does. However, Rondo is more experienced, is a far superior passer, and has a higher basketball IQ. We’ll see who Sacramento goes after, but it’s pretty clear that they’re trying to acquire a high-level point guard to pair with DeMarcus Cousins.
