August Wilson’s legendary play, The Piano Lesson, is returning to Broadway this fall. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington and Danielle Brooks will star in the Broadway revival that is set to debut on September 19, 2022 at the St. James Theater. With Tony Award nominee LaTanya Richardson directing the play, the production is set to run on Broadway for approximately 16 weeks.
“August Wilson dedicated his life and devoted his talent to dramatizing our stories and our experience,” director LaTanya Richardson said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“In doing so, he forever changed what it means to be Black in America. His plays built empathy, created community and showed us the power of representation. The Piano Lesson is one of his most enduring, profound and consequential masterpieces, and I am reveling in this opportunity to present it to Broadway audiences for the first time since its premiere.”
The production of Wilson’s legendary play offers Jackson a full-circle moment. The Academy Award winner starred in the same play at the Yale Repertory Theatre in the late 1980s before becoming an understudy on Broadway. Meanwhile, Brooks returns to Broadway after starring in the 2015 production of The Color Purple. As for Washington, it is his Broadway debut.
