Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film The Irishman will apparently be receiving some kind of theatrical release. It is being produced and distributed by Netflix so it was only expected to appear on the streaming service. However, according to star Robert DeNiro, Netflix is currently finalizing a deal to release the film theatrically. It would be the second Netflix-produced feature to receive a theatrical release after this year’s Roma.
DeNiro spoke about the film on Sunday at the Marrakech Film Festival. “We’ve talked about it with Netflix. They are going to do a presentation of our film the way it should be, in a theater, in certain venues, the best theatrical venues there can be. How they resolve it is, in the beginning, they will show it on the big screen — we’re talking about big venues where it would play, where it should play, and what happens after that, I’m not sure.”
The Irishman marks the latest collaborations between DeNiro and director Martin Scorsese. The duo has previously worked together on Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Cape Fear. The film tells the story of a mob hitman as he recalls his possible involvement with the killing of Jimmy Hoffa.
The Irishman has no release date yet.
