In the spirit of Mother’s Day this coming weekend, The Game has dropped a new single titled, “Mama” featuring Sonyae, in homage to Tupac’s late mother, Afeni Shakur.
The Compton rapper quotes lyrics from Tupac’s 1995 classic, “Dear Mama” and salutes all the mothers including his own, on the emotional tribute that was produced by StreetRunner and Tarik Azzouz.
“And even though your only son grew up to be a thug, you ain’t never stopped showin’ me love,” Game raps, adding, “We ain’t shit without our mamas.”
He also honored Afeni’s memory with a post on Instagram. “In the wake of Afeni Shakur’s untimely death, I would like to wish her well on her journey to heaven,” he wrote. “My condolences are with Sekyiwa Shakur & their immediate family in their time of mourning. You have endured a great loss but her soul can now fly free & she is reunited with her only son in time to hug him for Mother’s Day.”
The rapper explains that everyone from Tupac Shakur to Barack Obama would not be the same without the influence of their mother. He also takes an opportunity revisit his own experiences throughout the song.
In the final moments of the record, Game sends out thoughts to his mother as well as Afeni. “I know you’re happy you’re with Pac now. I know he alright. He got his mama,” A clip of Tupac’s “Dear Mama” finishes out the remainder of the song.
“Mama” comes a week after The Game’s tribute to singer, Prince with the song “Rest In Purple”.
